Arsenal player ratings vs Man United: Timber promising, Nketiah and Ramsdale poor
Arsenal were punished for two sloppy errors as they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United in New Jersey on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s side, who beat the MLS All-Stars 5-0 earlier in the week, started brightly and should have gone in front when Gabriel Martinelli was denied twice by Tom Heaton.
But a poor mistake by Aaron Ramsdale allowed Bruno Fernandes to open the scoring soon after and then a poor piece of play by Gabriel Magalhaes saw Jason Sancho race away to double the scoring for United before half-time.
There were no further goals in the second half, but a penalty shootout took place at the end of the game, with United winning 5-3 after Fabio Vieira missed for the Gunners.
Below are the Arsenal player ratings for the pre-season clash.
Aaron Ramsdale
Poor mistake for the first goal. Should have done better to keep out Fernandes’ shot. Didn’t get close to a single penalty in the shootout. 4
Jurien Timber
Started well, but was left a bit isolated at times when United broke quickly down Arsenal’s right. One of Arsenal’s better players on the night. 7
William Saliba
Wasn’t really troubled. Looked comfortable when he was on the ball. 7
Gabriel Magalhaes
Dreadful error which was seized upon by Sancho in the build up to the second goal. 6
Takehiro Tomiyasu
Couldn’t really get into the game as an attacking force down the right hand side. Replaced at half-time. 6
Declan Rice
Another player who started brightly before struggling a bit as the game wore on. 6
Martin Odegaard
Never really got into the game. Was always on the fringes of things. 5
Kai Havertz
Like Odegaard, he was always on the fringes of the game in the first half. Didn’t cause United any problems in the first half. Could have done better with a header after the interval. 5
Bukayo Saka
On the receiving end of some physical challenges once again. Never really threatened. 6
Eddie Nketiah
Martinez kept him quiet. Struggled a bit whenever the ball was played into his feet. Missed a chance in the second half. 4
Gabriel Martinelli
Missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring early on. Should have done better after being picked out unmarked. 5
Substitutes
Kieran Tierney
Injected a bit of energy into the second half. 6
Ben White
Never really troubled after coming on at centre-back. 5
Thomas Partey
Looked composed when he was on the ball at right-back. 5
Gabriel Jesus
Booked after a poor challenge. Looked frustrated at times. 5
Leandro Trossard
Couldn’t make a difference after being introduced. 5
Emile Smith Rowe
No real impact, but looked tidy in possession. Saw a later header deflected wide. 5
Fabio Vieira
Never really in the game. Only player to miss a penalty in the shootout. 4
